Oskaloosa--The William Penn women's soccer team battled to the final whistle but came up short in a 2-1 loss to Graceland Wednesday evening in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
The Statesmen (1-7-1, 0-5 Heart) created plenty of opportunities, finishing with an 11-8 shot advantage, including a 6-3 edge in attempts on frame.
The Yellowjackets (4-3-2, 1-2-1 Heart) struck first in the 11th minute and held off a flurry of four first-half shots from the Statesmen to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Graceland doubled its lead in the 67th minute, but William Penn clawed back late. A foul in the box set up a penalty kick, and Lilly Cote (So., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) buried it to pull the navy and gold within one.
Despite seven second-half chances, the Statesmen were unable to find the equalizer.
Cote and Anna Museler (Jr., Dresden, Germany, Engineering) paced the offense with two shots apiece.
Up Next: William Penn travels to Atchison, Kan., Saturday to face Benedictine at 5 p.m.
