William Penn Battles Hard in 3-1 Loss to Clarke
Oskaloosa--It was a better result than the first time the two programs met nearly a month ago, but it was still a loss for the Lady Statesmen netters, falling 3-1 to Clarke in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Tuesday.
William Penn (12-14, 2-4 MCC) lost by scores of 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 28-30. The navy and gold were swept by Clarke (17-10, 3-3 MCC) at the Ashford Tournament back on September 16.
The hosts actually held a marginal .214-.212 hitting advantage and pushed the Crusaders deep in every set, including owning set point at 28-27 in the fourth set. The visitors fought through, however, to even their league mark.
Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) led all players with 16 kills, while Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) was also very productive with 13 kills and a match-high .364 attack clip.
Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) and Katy Hingtgen (Sr., West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) collected nine winners apiece and Katie Rielly (Jr., Oskaloosa, Des Moines Area CC) contributed seven.
A total of 33 assists were credited to Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC), while Dayna Sammons (Fr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Menomonee Falls HS) posted 19.
Jeanette Cunningham (So., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Western Brown HS) was William Penn's best net defender with three solo blocks and four assists.
In addition to her kill tally, Taylor dug 17 attacks as well.
Next: William Penn travels to Indianola this weekend to compete in the Simpson Invitational. On Friday, the Lady Statesmen meet St. Thomas (Minn.) at 3 p.m. and host Simpson at 5:15 p.m. On Saturday, the squad faces off with Monmouth (Ill.) at 10 a.m. and Loras at 12:15 p.m.
