WPU Drops Heart Opener to Iowa Wesleyan

Oskaloosa--The William Penn women's wrestling team was unable to do get much going Thursday as it fell 35-11 to Iowa Wesleyan in Heart of America Athletic Conference dual-meet action.

The Statesmen (0-1, 0-1 Heart), who lost all six of the night's contested matches to the Tigers (1-0, 1-0 Heart), got on the scoreboard via a pair of forfeits and a solid outing by its 123-pounder.

The hosts forfeited at the first two weights and then fell short at 116 pounds as they quickly trailed 14-0.

Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) then battled hard at 123 pounds, but could not get past Nonnie Justice in a 7-4 decision. By scoring in the match, however, she earned the navy and gold one point.

Unfortunately, the next three bouts also went in favor of IWU as it locked up the team win. MayLee Edwards (So., Newton, Kan., Psychology) and Payge Fuller (Fr., Plattsburg, Mo.) then trimmed the deficit as they had their hands raised via forfeits at 155 and 170 pounds, respectively.

The evening concluded with a setback at 191 pounds as well.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. next Friday and Saturday to compete in the Missouri Valley Invitational.
