Statesmen End Pre-Break Slate with 2-2 Record at Avila Duals
Kansas City, Mo.--For the third week in a row, William Penn women's wrestling team received a plethora of mat time in a dual tournament as it competed at the Avila Eagle Duals Friday.
WPU (7-10) began the day with a 20-17 victory over Friends (Kan.) before dropping a 24-19 matchup with host Avila. The navy and gold defeated Saint Mary (Kan.) 23-19, but then fell 29-11 to Missouri Baptist to wrap up the day.
WPU 20, Friends 17
Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) got the Statesmen on the board with a fall at 116 pounds, while Brittany Cotter (So., Katy, Texas, Nursing) tacked on a technical fall at 123 pounds.
After losing two matches in a row, William Penn took advantage of a thin Falcon lineup with forfeits for Sandra Arellano (Fr., Wichita, Kan., Biology) and Kylee Eastwood (Fr., Fontana, Kan., Undecided) at 143 and 170 pounds, respectively. Samantha Ruano (Jr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) then guaranteed a Statesmen team win as she only lost by decision and also scored in the setback.
Avila 24, WPU 19
WPU went back and forth with its host, but in the end could not do enough. Cotter, Ashleigh Denny (So., El Paso, Texas, Undecided), at 136 pounds, and Payge Fuller (Fr., Plattsburg, Mo.), at 170 pounds, all had their hands due to forfeits, while Steinkamp won her contested bout by technical fall.
WPU 23, Saint Mary (Kan.) 19
Steinkamp, Fuller, and Ruano all won by forfeit, while MayLee Edwards (So., Newton, Kan., Psychology) pinned her opponent at 155 pounds. Mami Selemani (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) won a tight 6-3 match at 130 pounds as well.
Missouri Baptist 29, WPU 11
The Statesmen could not match the Spartans in the finale with Steinkamp taking a forfeit and Cotter winning by technical fall. 130-pounder Mariah Webster (Fr., Mingo, Iowa, Elementary Education) and 155-pounder Kaylah Johnson (Fr., Houston, Texas, Biology) notched one point each as well in decision losses against MBU.
Next Up: William Penn is off until after Christmas, returning to action on December 29 with a trip to Iowa City to compete in the Salute to Service Invitational.
