Statesmen Drop Conference Opener to Ranked Mustangs
Oskaloosa--The No. 15 William Penn men's volleyball team dropped its 2026 Heart of America Athletic Conference opener to No. 12 Mount Mercy in a 3–0 sweep Tuesday night.
The Statesmen (3–2, 0–1 Heart) fell into an early 10–2 deficit in the opening set. The teams traded points throughout the middle portion, but William Penn was unable to recover as the Mustangs secured a 25–16 first-set victory.
Set two followed a similar script, with Mount Mercy jumping ahead 7–3 before both sides exchanged rallies. The Navy and Gold surged in front 20–19 behind a 10–4 run, but the Mustangs responded to reclaim a 24–23 edge. The extended set required a two-point margin, and Mount Mercy closed it out with back-to-back kills.
The third set remained tight midway through, with MMU holding a narrow 14–13 lead. The Mustangs then used a decisive 11–5 run to finish the match.
Offensively, William Penn recorded a 41–35 advantage in kills but posted a .118 attack percentage compared to Mount Mercy's .265. Both teams committed attack errors, though the Statesmen held a 23–15 edge in that category.
Marton Sebestyen (Fr., Gyenesdias, Hungary, Business Management) led William Penn with 11 kills, while Ben Cemeno-Castillo (Sr., Joliet, Ill., Business Management) and Emilio Spanner (Jr., Sint Eustatius, Sports Management) added eight apiece. Ben Brinkman (So., Appleton, Wis., Sports Management) contributed seven kills.
Brady Zell (So., Wales, Wis., Business Management) directed the offense with 26 assists, and Britten Beallis (Jr., Naperville, Ill., Sports Management) anchored the net defense with seven blocks.
