Statesmen Sweep Morningside Behind Balanced Attack

Oskaloosa--The No. 10 William Penn men's volleyball team delivered another strong performance in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, defeating Morningside in straight sets Saturday night.

William Penn (12-5, 8-4 Heart) secured the 3-0 victory over the Mustangs (17-9, 5-8 Heart) with set scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-20. The Statesmen posted set attack percentages of .424, .314, and .281, while Morningside finished with marks of .294, .235, and .156.

The opening set began with both teams trading rallies before the Statesmen held a narrow 13-12 edge. William Penn began to separate with an 8-4 run to create breathing room. Holding a 21-16 advantage, the Statesmen closed the set on a 4-3 stretch to take the early lead.

The second set opened tightly as Morningside built a 5-2 run. William Penn responded with four unanswered points before the teams resumed exchanging rallies. The set featured eight ties before the Statesmen finally took control at 16-15. The Navy and Gold pulled away with a decisive 9-4 run to secure the second set.

William Penn jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third set before the Mustangs trimmed the margin to 8-6. The Statesmen answered with a 5-1 surge to extend the lead, but Morningside countered with a 12-5 run to move ahead 19-18. The Statesmen quickly regained momentum, finishing the match with a 7-1 run. The closing stretch was sparked by Marton Sebestyen (Fr., Gyenesdias, Hungary, Business Management), who produced a five-point service run that included two aces and three team blocks.

Statistically, the Statesmen held a 46-39 edge in kills, with both teams totaling 100 attacks. William Penn committed 12 attack errors compared to 16 by Morningside, finishing with a .340 team attack percentage while the Mustangs posted a .230 mark.

The Statesmen also controlled the service line with five aces and six errors, while Morningside recorded one ace and eight errors.

Ben Cemeno-Castillo (Sr., Joliet, Ill., Business Management) led the offense with 17 kills. Tommy Fellows (So., Shorewood, Ill., Exercise Science) followed with 12 kills, while Emilio Spanner (Sr., Sint Eustatius, Sports Management) added 11.

Brady Zell (So., Wales, Wis., Business Management) directed the attack with 34 assists. Zell also paced the defense with 11 digs, while Joao Gabriel Filippelli (Jr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Business Management) recorded nine.

At the net, William Penn dominated with 10.5 blocks compared to just one for Morningside. Ben Brinkman (So., Appleton, Wis., Sports Management) finished with seven block assists, while Fellows and Spanner added four block assists each.

"It's a good turnaround. Not a lot of time in between games, excited about the first couple of sets and then the third getting pushed, and the response was, 'We'll just leave it at this and not let you score anymore,'" Head Coach Luke Bentley said. "A lot of guys played well today, and hopefully, it's a good step for us as we keep moving forward."

Next Up: The Statesmen travel to Dubuque, Iowa, to face Clarke in Heart action at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
